We talk a lot about digital signage here on the Skykit blog, which makes sense, since it’s our business. But we don’t want to assume that you’re already using digital signage or that you even want to.

So in case you’re on the fence about whether digital signage is really successful, here are 9 reasons digital signage works and is a good investment.

1. Variety

Digital signage provides you first and foremost with great variety.

For one thing, you can place screens in any number of locations. Businesses have used them in stores and offices. Restaurants and schools have installed them and found great success. Airports and subway stations use them to help direct people. Companies are even working on developing portable signs for temporary situations and outdoor signs.

And the screens themselves can vary, from the size of a small TV to as large as a billboard. You’ll easily be able to find something to fit your needs.

And the variety doesn’t stop there. Most people might think of advertising when it comes to digital signage, and that’s certainly a great way to use it, but it’s not the only use. Businesses and companies have found that they work very successfully in office settings as a means of communication. Schools use them to give announcements and keep people up to date. Restaurants are switching to digital menus. Digital signs are even showing up in healthcare settings.

That being said, all those choices can be overwhelming, but don’t be discouraged. There’s a lot of information about the specific ways to use digital signage, like in schools or retail.

2. Conservation of Material

I’ll admit it, it’s a little expensive, making the switch to digital signage. But in the long run, you’ll actually save money with your screens.

How is that?

Think about it this way. You’re putting down a lump sum for the screens and maybe even software to run it all. But once those are one time purchases. After that, the only cost is replacing screens, adding more, or maybe hiring a designer for your ads.

With your screens, you can have more ads without having to throw out old ones. No more wasting paper, ink, or other costly materials.

Compared to the long term costs of designing and printing ads every time you want a change, it’s a pretty good deal.

3. Connected Network

The core concept of digital signage is connecting a series of screens.

Because your screens are all connected, your advertising and communication can happen instantly. That means any news you share is current and up to date. Ads can be switched with the click of a button. Information can be corrected on all machines through one simple change on your software.

In a nutshell, digital software is easy to control, especially if you invest in a software designed for it. You can put your ads on all your screens, or pick and choose. Often, the software will help you design the ads as well.

4. Instant Communication

Digital signage is great because you are instantly connected to each screen from a single place.

This allows you to make instant changes or corrections without worrying about missing one of your ads. So you can be sure that all your ads are up to date, all your news is current and all your ads are where they need to be.

5. Targeted Ads

Now, I keep talking about instant communication and widespread reach, but your signs don’t all have to display the same ads and screens.

You can change the ad depending on the time of day or location of the screen.

For example, let’s say that a library has recently installed digital signage. There are five different screens: at the entrance, the children’s section, the main check-out desk, the computer area, and the coffee shop in the basement.

Some ads might go on all the screens, like if there’s a holiday coming up and the library will be closed, or a change in the business hours.

But some ads will only go on a few screens. The screen in the children’s department might advertise some kids’ programs while the screen in the coffee shop might share about an upcoming music night.

Now this is a pretty clear cut example. We know that it wouldn’t be wise for the screen in the computer area to show ads for the latest kids’ book. But sometimes it takes a little more research about your different locations, and trial and error, to figure out where to place ads for the best effect. This is a time when big data can come in handy.

6. Cost and Time Efficient

Like I said in point #2, you can save a lot of money in materials when it comes to digital signage. But that’s not all you’ll save.

You’ll also save time.

No more finding ads and replacing them. No more cluttered bulletin boards. No more rewriting messages on chalkboards every day.

With digital signage, updating or changing an ad takes only a few moments. You don’t have to worry about finding and removing all your old ads or wondering if they’ll pop up at bad times. One click will replace all your old ads with the new ones on every screen you choose.

7. Interactive Capability

Digital signage has made a lot of progress in terms of interactive capability. It’s pretty exciting, if you ask me.

The standard, static ad doesn’t offer much in terms of customer interaction at first glance. But an easy way to get customers involved is to add a code for more information or a special deal.

Or you could use a live feed and feature what people are saying on social media. Create hashtags for people to use, ask questions and encourage conversation.

A few companies are even looking into using tablet technology for their screens, allowing touchscreens to make ads truly interactive.

8. Multiple Mediums

Digital signs are great because you have so many options when it comes to your ads. The possibilities are nearly endless.

You could go the traditional route and display a static ad, like a poster. This works well in high traffic areas, where people don’t have time to stop and look for long. Your static ads can incorporate elements like audio or movement, but they are are defined by a single screen. Of course, you don’t have to show only one ad on your screen, you can cycle through multiple ads.

Another option is a video ad. Much like the commercials you see on TV and the internet, video ads tell a story of some sort. They provide a way for people to get more information and connect with your brand.

Of course, ads aren’t the only thing you can display on your screens. You can also feature live feeds to help keep people up to date on news and announcements. Digital signage is a great communication tool for companies and businesses.

Digital signage also provides you with a great chance to engage your customers, namely by incorporating social media. Showing what people have to say about your product will encourage conversation and help people stay informed.

9. Appearance

Digital signs look nice.

It’s a simple point, but an important one.

Digital signs look sleek and professional. Many of the software programs available help you design professional looking ads without hiring a designer.

Digital signs also flow seamlessly between different types of ads: static, animated or video.

So what do you think? Do you like digital signage? Why?
